Demand controlled ventilation (DCV) aims to reduce the energy used by ventilation systems while maintaining the prescribed indoor air quality (IAQ). Buildings are often occupied at much lower levels than the designed maximums, so adapting the ventilation needs to suit is logical. Today’s DCV systems will be discussed together with areas being researched now and with a specific focus on what is required in the future.

The purpose of this workshop is to present the link between European regulatory framework for energy efficiency and environmental protection and the developed energy efficiency labeling in the various products covered by Eurovent Certification. WS 8: Automated solar shading, a necessary instrument for optimum HVAC design in a holistic approach

Through the windows of a building, a significant amount of solar energy enters. This workshop will show that dynamic control of this energy offers benefits, both economically and for the indoor comfort. Among the many solar shading solutions, vertical roller blinds (‘solar screens’) have thermal and optical properties that allow significant energy savings and an interesting ROI, provided that they are automated properly. In addition, HVAC design and control can be optimized and will provide additional benefits when automated solar shading is taken into consideration.

One of the most significant barriers to improving energy efficiency in buildings is a lack of knowledge about the determinant factors for energy use. Building energy consumption is mainly influenced by six factors: (1) climate, (2) building envelop, (3) building services and energy systems, (4) building operation and maintenance, (5) occupants’ activities and behaviour and (6) indoor environmental quality provided. The workshop provides a platform for the discussion on the above problems and the potential methods to solve the problems.

School building design and renovation are important topics nowadays; children spend most of their days in these environments that can affect their comfort, performance and even health, so attention to the quality of the indoor environment is a must. Furthermore, energy consumption of school buildings is often very high, so designers should take care about this aspect too. During this interactive workshop some important IEQ and energy topics will be discussed. Also the new REHVA guidebook 'Indoor Environment in Schools' will be presented and explained.

Throughout Europe building simulation is used in the daily practice as a powerful tool. The workshop aims at investigation of the application of building performance simulation in different countries throughout Europe and from there on try to come up with an ideal application of building simulation (the design of low or zero energy buildings etc.). One objective of the workshop is also to propose that the results of the building simulation programs to be accepted as the basis of energy certificates and to find ways to use the building simulation programs to select cost optimal measures for improvement of energy efficiency.

The workshop is focused on presentation of modern methods for design, control and operation of energy efficient heating systems in large spaces and industrial halls. Outputs of the workshop will be included in new REHVA guidebook. The topics of introductory presentations will describe state-of- the-art of light and dark gas radiant heaters, panel radiant heating and industrial air heating systems with recent results of simulation and measurements example in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Slovenia.

In order to reduce the energy consumption of a building, design teams usually focus on reducing heating and cooling needs and the systems to cover them. However, the more efficiently the thermal aspect is being dealt with, the more attention should be given to the influence of lighting and user’s electronic devices. The aim of the workshop is to work on a global approach which should also take in account the efficiency of materials used in buildings to respect a global energy and greenhouse gas emission equation including the embodied energy.

The indoor climatic quality (ICQ) strongly influences the well-being of occupants, the productivity in working and educational environments and the related energy costs to maintain suitable comfort conditions. As a consequence, how to measure and evaluate the ICQ is a crucial aspect, complementary to the evaluation/ certification of the building energy quality. The workshop will focus on ICQ assessment, facing firstly the investigation methods and then presenting significant case studies.

In many European countries, there are continual efforts aiming at rating different heating systems in terms of energy efficiency. The results of this work have a strong steering influence on the commercial market-place since “preferred” systems and “less acceptable” systems tend to emerge from this work. This workshop will discuss calculation methods of system efficiencies used in some countries, as well as the methods provided in the EN 15316 standard. We will be presenting and discussing examples for conventional heating systems and more advanced low-temperature heating systems.
WS 21: The microenvironment around persons in ventilated spaces

This workshop discusses the flow and transport processes in the microenvironment around a person and between persons in a room. The flows considered are for example the thermal boundary layer around a person, the inhalation and exhalation from a person as well as speaking, sneezing and coughing. A person’s movement is also considered as a source of flow in the microenvironment. The workshop is primarily for researchers and related industry. The workshop should identify new research areas.
WS 22: How to improve use of CEN standards in implementation of EPBD

The workshop will present the work of the CENSE project and discuss the impact the revised EPBD will have on implementing harmonized methods in Europe and the role the revision of the standards may have. The objective of this workshop is to inform and discuss the application of then EPBD-Standards in national building regulations. Special issues that will be discussed are, how the EPBD-standards can influence the work of consultants within the building and HVAC industry and what are the possibilities to integrate the use of the EPBD standards.

This workshop focuses on the ultimate protection of people and buildings in case of fire and smoke. The current status of European standards and regulations for fire dampers and smoke control dampers in HVAC systems are reviewed. The main focus of the workshop is on the need of changes in the standards and regulations as fire- and smoke control dampers are more than specified safety components. One objective of the workshop is also to highlight the structure and the main differences between the relevant EN and UL standards.

The aim of the workshop is to describe the latest technologies available in order to improve the cooling energy efficiency in the data center environments and show how the cooling energy costs can be cut by 50%. Depending on the data center size, different approaches can be followed to reduce the energy consumption: the use of direct expansion systems with modulating capacity and airflow for computer rooms of small and medium business enterprises, and for large data centers the application of chilled water systems optimized with free cooling chillers and advanced precision cooling units.
