Every European citizen has right to indoor air quality (IAQ) that does not endanger the health. Ensuring optimal ventilation across the Member States is a key to reduce this BoD (burden of disease), to improve productivity and quality of life, and to remove associated social disparities between population groups and among Member States. At the same time, it is the key to meet the objectives of European energy conservation policies for buildings (Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, EPBD).
Recent EnVie project estimated in 2008 that the annual burden of disease (BoD) related to inadequate IAQ is 2 million disability adjusted life years (DALY) in EU27. Reducing this BoD is a high priority in the European health policies.
The main output of HealthVent are the health-based ventilation guidelines reconciling health and energy impacts. The project contributes to the prevention of major diseases, to the reduction of health inequalities and to the promotion of sustainable health investments at national and regional level.
HealthVent is supported by the European Commission under the EU Health Programme 2008-2013 managed by the Executive Agency for Health and Consumers (EAHC).

The final event of HealthVent, hosted by Mrs Catherine Stihler MEP, was organized on February 20th 2013 in the European  Parliament. Speakers of the event including researchers, policy makers, as well as representatives of patient organizations discussed and highlighted the outcomes of the project. April 2012: SUMMARY REPORT on EU Ventilation Standards Released

This report summarises the results of Work Package 5 of the HealthVent project. It provides the necessary background information for the work towards health based ventilation guidelines for Europe.

The objective of this work package was to give an insight into the overall state of ventilation in Europe, comprising distribution of ventilation systems, building regulations, ventilation standards and compliance to regulations.

The prescriptive ventilation guidelines based on the real world indoor air quality and ventilation problems were also elaborated. They are considered being an important contribution on the way towards the general health based ventilation guidelines. They are not the part of the present report and will be included in the final report of HealthVent project.

This project is supported by the European Commission under the Health Programme
