Professor Klaus W. Usemann passed away on March 10th, 2013. We have lost a colleague of high reputation, a friend and a shining example in engineering.
Hewas over many decades “the engineer” in building services. He combined practical experience with scientific approach. He served in various functions in VDI, he was in the chair of numerous committees, he for decades was the German delegate to REHVA. His contributions and achievements were appreciated and acknowledged. He was awarded with the Hermann Rietschel Honorary Medal for building services engineering, with the Euler Medal for electrical engineering and with the REHVA Gold Medal. We shall miss him.

European Parliament’s Report on the Energy Roadmap 2050

The European Parliament’s Report on the Energy Roadmap 2050, adopted in the ITRE (Industry, Research and Energy) Committee in January, echoes the call already voiced in the EU Roadmap for a low-carbon economy in 2050 as well as in the Energy Efficiency Directive, to urgently address the energy efficient renovation of Europe’s buildings. The Parliament’s Report also calls on the Member States to fully implement the recently adopted Energy Efficiency Directive, and to adopt ambitious long-term building renovation strategies accordingly. European Commission Projects

Save the date – Workshops during CLIMA 2013 - 17 June 2013, Prague

3 international projects with REHVA participation will be highlighted in dedicated workshops during CLIMA 2013 in Prague. The workshops deal with 3 interesting topics: Special HVAC Solutions for the Refurbishment of Historic Buildings (3ENCULT), Practical Benchmarking of HVAC Systems Energy Efficiency in Use (iSERV), Cross-disciplinary Education on NZEB (IDES-EDU). Consortium leaders and partners including REHVA members will introduce the project outcomes and invite interested participants to an open discussion about the exploitation of the results.

iSERV’s online application “H.E.R.O.” is evolving

H.E.R.O. (HVAC Energy Reporter and Optimiser) is at the heart of iSERVcmb. It is the online application which project participants use for analysing, benchmarking, and optimising their HVAC systems. Over the past few months, H.E.R.O. has evolved – new features have been introduced and more monitoring data has been put into the database. You can find more details about the application here. The 4th Newsletter of the iSERV project was released in March about HERO and further outcomes of the project, which has now entered an intensive data gathering phase as it gears up to supporting its end users in understanding and achieving the energy savings available in their HVAC systems.  This issue highlights the 25% reduction in the total building electrical energy use achieved from a pilot project using the iSERV approach over the last 7 years. It shows conclusively that significant energy and monetary savings can be achieved through good control of even sub-optimal HVAC systems without significant investment, provided the right information and control options are available. The project still requires end users who would like to reduce energy use in their buildings. If you are interested in the participation please contact your local iSERV Partner for further details here.

High visibility of 3ENCULT results at Salon the Restauro in Ferrara

3ENCULT participated in the 20th edition of one of Europe’s most important fairs on conservation and restoration of our cultural heritage with a booth and two public seminars. The seminars showcased the results of the interdisciplinary project joining researchers and experts from the field of restoration, buildings energy efficiency, architecture as well as public authorities. Participants discussed the opportunities and success factors of the energy efficient refurbishment of historic buildings. In the booth the prototypes of passive and active retrofit solutions developed during the project were exposed during the 3 days fair like a highly efficient led lighting solution or a semi-transparent photovoltaic glass with thermal isolating properties.  Find out more about the project and its outcomes on the project website.

BPIE provides guidance to EU Member States on how to effectively implement the cost-optimal methodology at national level. Convinced that MS would benefit from additional guidance on the cost-optimality process, BPIE intends to provide with this report additional practical examples on how to effectively implement the cost-optimal methodology at national level. The main goal is to evaluate the implications of different critical parameters, as well as to share the good practices across EU countries. Three case studies are delivered with the support of consultants from Austria (e-sieben), Germany (IWU) and Poland (BuildDesk). Read more and download the report and case studies.
