In memoriam Thierry van Steenberghe

We learned with great sadness that our valued colleague, Thierry van Steenberghe suddenly passed away on 6 May 2017. Thierry had a fundamental role in developing REHVA, and its Brussels Office to what it is today and successfully integrated our organisation in the world of European projects, as well as partner and stakeholder networks. His expertise, together with his joyful and reliable character shaped REHVA Office, and the image of REHVA at European level. He has kept contact with the office and cared about REHVA after his retirement. He had always a good advice or encouraging opinion to share with us. We will miss him, and continue the legacy he left to develop REHVA.

Healthy buildings Day and Barometer 2017

May 31st was the Healthy Building Day at the European Parliament. REHVA delegates were invited to the event, where findings from the Healthy Homes Barometer 2017 were presented and discussed with high-level speakers, including MEP Bendt Bendtsend and his shadow rapporteur colleagues in charge of the EP opinion on the EPBD. The Healthy Homes Barometer 2017 (download the report here) is the third edition of a series of Pan-European surveys published by Velux Group and developed by researchers from Ecofys, Fraunhofer IBP and Copenhagen Economics. The aims of this study is to analyze the impact that buildings have on Europeans’ health, reminding to building designers and engineers their role and responsibilities to the society. REHVA, for long time being involved in these issues, will held a workshop during the forthcoming Healthy Buildings Conference 2017 in Lublin, Poland.

EPBD review news: ITRE and ENVI Committees’ Draft report on the EPBD review

The European Parliament ITRE Committee (Committee on Industry, Research and Energy) has published its draft report on the revised EPBD with amendments to the proposal of the Commission. Rapporteur, Bent Bentsen (EPP) is in favour of addressing IEQ and health aspects better within EPBD and is currently working on getting 500 votes in the EP to make their first reading amendment proposal politically strong. Read the ITRE Draft report here.
ENVI (Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety) prepared a separate draft opinion led by Anneli Jäätteenmäki (ALDE). ENVI especially focuses on healthy buildings, beside electro mobility stressing that energy efficient buildings must be properly ventilated and heated to maintain a healthy indoor environment. Read the ENVI Draft opinion here.
REHVA will submit comments to both draft opinions that will be available on the REHVA website in June. ITRE will vote about the final opinion on 11 October 2017.
