The aim of the guideline is to support, in a practical way, a design process for realizing Nearly-Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB) in the context of Mediterranean-climate, focusing more on the mechanical systems than on the building envelope, which has previously been treated in Part 1. The Guidebook covers the design of Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, energy recovery and free cooling aspects, renewable energy adaptation, and innovative system design approaches. Fundamental design and selection methodology has also been included.

"This Guide is about NZEB in Mediterranean Regions. To achieve this target, countries in the Mediterranean Basin must prefer strategies such as energy recovery, evaporative cooling, natural ventilation, free cooling, renewable sources and innovative system design."

Dr. Murat Çakan
Istanbul Technical University, Turkey

“Mediterranean countries play a crucial role in the transition towards zero energy buildings as they represent a fruitful playground where to test and apply high performing technologies for both heating and cooling. Moreover, humidity control is essential in some areas too. A conscious building energy design (balancing envelope thermal insulation and capacity, passive and active heating and cooling strategies, suitable integration of renewable energy sources) is nowadays fundamental to drive our post-carbon society.”

Crash course into NZEB Design Strategies for Residential Buildings in Mediterranean Regions

You can also follow the crash course on our Knowledge Hub. You can also read together with the GB 31, all the REHVA guidebooks in an e-book format in the REHVA Knowledge Hub.

Course Summary:

Mediterranean countries play a crucial role in the transition towards zero energy buildings as they represent a fruitful playground where to test and apply high performing technologies for both heating and cooling. Moreover, humidity control is essential in some areas too. A conscious building energy design (balancing envelope thermal insulation and capacity, passive and active heating and cooling strategies, suitable integration of renewable energy sources) is nowadays fundamental to drive our post-carbon society.

This course is based on the Guidebook 31 about NZEB in Mediterranean Regions. Countries in the Mediterranean Basin must prefer strategies such as energy recovery, evaporative cooling, natural ventilation, free cooling, renewable sources and innovative system design.

A Bachelor level in Engineering is requested to assist this course.
