The Nearly Zero Energy Hotels (neZEH) project aims at accelerating the rate of refurbishment of existing buildings into Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (nZEB), supporting the private sector and promoting the front runners. The main target group of the project is SME hotels, which represent 90% of the European hospitality market.

The major outputs of the project will be:

-An integrated set of decision support tools to assist hoteliers to identify appropriate solutions and to design feasible and sustainable NZEB projects;
-A dynamic communication channel between the building sector and the hotels industry, which will enable the exchanging between demand and supply side and the endorsement of the NZEB concept;
-Demonstration pilot projects in seven (7) countries to act as “living”examples, aiming to increase the rate of NZE renovation projects in the targeted countries;
-Practical tools, informational materials, training and capacity building activities to support nationally the implementation and dissemination of NEZEH projects;
-Integrated communication campaign and tools to increase awareness for the NZEB benefits, to promote front runners and to foster replication; challenging much more SMEs to invest in refurbishment projects in order to achieve NZE levels.

High Level Event at the European Parliament - 17th March 2016 in Brussels

neZEH at CLIMAMED 2015, 10-11 September, Juan-les-Pin, France

REHVA will organise a workshop around the neZEH project during CLIMAMED 2015 on 10-11 September in Juan-les-Pins, France. The workshop High energy performance hotels on track to nearly zero energy buildings  co-chaired by Stefano Corgnati, REHVA President-elect and by Theocharis Tsoutsos, neZEH Project Coordinator will present key result of the project.

Hotels are a good example of buildings where energy is used not only for climatic control but also for providing services to the guests. The neZEH project took the challenge of defining country specific numerical nZEB benchmarks for refurbished hotel buildings in the 6 partner countries (Croatia, Greece, France, Italy, Spain, and Sweden), where 14 pilot hotels were selected to receive technical assistance to plan their deep energy retrofit investments. The workshop will briefly introduce the project and highlight some of the selected case study hotels from Italy and France presented by the project partners in charge for technical assistance.  The aim is to initiate a discussion about the feasibility as well as the technical and non-technical challenges of nZEB refurbishment in the hospitality sector.

REHVA Annual Conference "Energy efficient, smart and healthy buildings" - Düsseldorf, 30 April 2014, 09:00 - 15:00 CET

First outcomes of the Nearly Zero Energy Hotels project were presented by REHVA vice-president Stefano P. Corgnati in the REHVA Annual Conference on 30 April 2014 in Düsseldorf. REHVA was in charge for defining initial criteria of an nZEB hotel, taking into account both the EU regulation on nZEB and the special features and needs of hotel buildings and the hospitality sector. Based on these requirements hotels are selected in each partner country as project pilots thus refurbishment plans and feasibility studies for each selected hotel will be developed by the end of the project. Stefano P. Corgnati presented also an existing nZEB hotel example, Stadhalle Boutique Hotel Vienna, which is the first net zero energy hotel in Europe. The case study was also published in the REHVA Journal issue 3/2014 disseminated during the Conference.

This project is supported by the European Commission under IEE - II
