Today, the revised clean energy files on the Energy Efficiency, the Renewables directive and the Governance of the Energy Union were approved by the Council of the EU.

By 2030, the EU has to reach the headline target on energy efficiency of at least 32,5 %, together with the obligation to achieve energy savings of 0.8 % each year between 2021 and 2030. The revision of the renewable energy directive sets the target of 32 % energy from renewable sources at the EU level for 2030 and supporting the ways of the use of renewable sources such as wind, solar, hydro, geothermal, biomass and biofuels. The Council also approved so-called governance regulation, which sets out the framework for the Governance of the Energy Union and climate action and defines how member states will cooperate with each other and with the European Commission towards reaching the settled headlines, including renewable and energy efficiency targets.

With today’s adoption by the Council, these three major files of the Clean Energy package came to the final stage in the legislative procedure. Furthermore, the three texts are scheduled to be published in the Official Journal of the EU on 21 December 2018. Later, all three files will enter into force on the third day after their publication in the Official Journal of the EU.
