The European Parliament and Council of the European Union have a provisional agreement on the European Climate Law. This law lays down the commitment of the EU to become climate neutral by 2050. Additionally, it also sets an intermediate target to reduce at least 55% of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, compared to 1990 levels.
Other elements of the climate law include a process for setting a climate target for 2040, a commitment for negative emissions after 2050 and a plan to create sector-specific roadmaps to facilitate the path towards climate neutrality.
