In light of the recent Russian invasion in Ukraine, the European Commission has adopted a plan on 8 March 2022 to decrease the dependency of the EU on the supply of Russian fossil fuels well before 2030, starting with gas. The plan focuses on increasing energy savings and accelerating the uptake of renewables, while also planning a legislative proposal to secure a significant gas storage by 1 October 2022.

Vice-President of the Commission, Frans Timmermans, phrased the REPowerEU plan as the next step for the Europe's energy transition. The implementation of Fit for 55 will ensure that at least 30% of the EU's total gas consumption is decreased by 2030. This is complemented by REPowerEU by the accelerating the uptake of renewables and diversifying the gas supply.
